Aftercare & FAQ

Taking care of your tattoo is just as important as getting it done.

Tattoo Aftercare Tips – How to Keep Your Tattoo Looking Fresh and Heal Properly

Proper aftercare is crucial for keeping your tattoo vibrant and preventing infections. Here’s what you should talk about:

1. The First 24-48 Hours: Critical Healing Time

  • Leave the bandage on for the recommended time (usually 2-6 hours, or as instructed by your artist).
  • Wash your hands before touching your tattoo.
  • Gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap.
  • Pat dry with a clean paper towel—don’t rub!
  • Apply a thin layer of recommended ointment (like Aquaphor or a tattoo-specific balm).

2. The First Week: Avoid Infection and Over-Moisturizing

  • Wash your tattoo 2-3 times a day with mild soap.
  • Switch to a fragrance-free, alcohol-free lotion to keep it hydrated.
  • Avoid heavy creams or petroleum-based products that can clog pores.
  • Don’t pick, scratch, or peel scabs—let them fall off naturally.

3. Avoid These During Healing:

  • Soaking (No swimming, hot tubs, or baths—showers only).
  • Sun Exposure (Keep it covered or use SPF once healed).
  • Tight Clothing (Friction can irritate and fade fresh ink).
  • Excessive Sweating (Avoid heavy workouts that make you sweat a lot).

4. The Peeling Phase: Itching and Flaking is Normal

  • The tattoo will start to peel like a sunburn—this is normal.
  • Don’t pick at it! Use a thin layer of lotion to ease the dryness.
  • It may appear dull or cloudy; this is part of the healing process.

5. Long-Term Tattoo Care: Keep It Looking Fresh

  • Keep your tattoo moisturized even after it heals.
  • Use sunscreen (SPF 30+), as UV rays can fade tattoos.
  • Stay hydrated and maintain healthy skin to preserve tattoo vibrancy.

6. When to See a Doctor

  • Signs of infection: excessive redness, swelling, pus, or a fever.
  • If your tattoo doesn’t seem to be healing after a few weeks.
